Why flaxseed oil?

There are five main reasons why flaxseed oil is the optimal choice in canine fatty acid supplementation:

1. Potency. Flaxseed oil is an impressive source of polyunsaturated fatty acids, containing approximately 57% a-linolenic acid (n-3) and 17% linoleic acid (n-6).
   
2. Efficacy. Flaxseed oil contains two times more Omega-3 fatty acids than marine lipids and is also a good source of Omega-6 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to be important modulators of the inflammatory response in dogs. a-linolenic acid (ALA), an n-3 fatty acid, has been demonstrated to be reliably converted to eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) in humans1. Omega-6 fatty acids are essential for epidermal health, as well as cell membrane strength.
   
3. Purity. With flaxseed oil coming from a naturally grown plant, there is no concern about contaminants, such as heavy metals.

The metabolic pathways and benefits of n-3 and n-6 fatty acids.

Polyunsaturated fatty acids of the n-3 and n-6 fatty acid families (Table 1) are metabolized to the mediators of inflammation (eicosanoids). The different families of eicosanoids exhibit different inflammatory responses. Eicosanoids from n-3 fatty acids are less inflammatory than the n-6 fatty acid eicosanoids (Table 2).

HESKA^® F.A. Granules (Omega-3 & Omega-6 Fatty Acid Supplement)

HESKA F.A. Granules are a highly concentrated source of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids provided in a ratio for beneficial effect to the dog's skin and haircoat. Formulated with a proprietary flavor base to enhance acceptance by dogs.

Indications: A supplemental source of omega fatty acids to aid in dry skin relief and benefit the improvement and maintenance of healthy skin and haircoat of dogs.

Dosage Schedule: The following dosage schedule is recommended for daily administration of HESKA F.A. Granules. Consult your veterinarian to determine the proper dosage level and schedule for each individual animal prescribed this product:

Each 5-gram scoop delivers a total of 500 mg Omega-3 fatty acids and 125 mg Omega-6 fatty acids.

Administration: A 5-gram scoop is enclosed in the container. Measure out the prescribed daily dose and administer over the dog's food. Product may be mixed with food, if necessary, to facilitate complete consumption.
